Peavey

Peavey is best known for amplifiers and pro audio, but its guitar history is substantial. The company pioneered CNC-based guitar production in the 1970s, built the T-60 and T-40 in large numbers, and later produced Predator, Patriot, Generation, Wolfgang, HP and Vandenberg instruments. Today the electric line stretches from the $199.99 Raptor Plus to $2,499 HP 2 and $2,999 Vandenberg models. This was never merely an amp company dabbling in guitars.

OVERVIEW

What to know quickly

FOUNDED Hartley Peavey founded Peavey Electronics in 1965 in Meridian, Mississippi.
GUITAR MILESTONE Peavey documents the T-60 as an early production guitar built with CNC manufacturing methods in the 1970s.
CURRENT ELECTRICS Raptor, HP 2 and Vandenberg are active electric-guitar series; the wider instrument catalog also includes basses and acoustics.

Peavey is an amplifier name with a real guitar-manufacturing history—not a novelty side project. For used guitars, identify the exact model and era before assuming anything about origin, quality tier or value.

IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR

Which Peavey do you have?

Peavey’s used guitar catalog is much broader than its current electric line. T-60, Predator, Patriot, Reactor, Generation, Mystic, Nitro, Wolfgang, HP and Vandenberg names can place a guitar in very different periods and price tiers.

  1. Find the complete model name. “Predator,” “T-60,” “Wolfgang Special” and “HP 2” are distinct markets, not minor variations.
  2. Record the serial number. Peavey provides an official serial-number lookup and historical catalogs; use those before relying on a generic decoder.
  3. Photograph origin markings. Peavey has produced instruments in different countries and eras; do not assume every model is U.S.-built.
  4. Document controls and hardware. T-series switching, tremolo systems, locking hardware and signature-model details can identify the correct version.
  5. Check neck construction. Bolt-on, set-neck and specialty configurations appear across different Peavey families.

USED VALUE GUIDE

The discontinued catalog is where Peavey gets especially interesting

Guitar Center showed roughly 168 used Peavey guitars in a September 2026 snapshot. Examples ranged from a Predator around $245 and Patriot around $350 to T-60s around $600–$700, older specialty electrics around the mid-hundreds, and Wolfgang/HP/Vandenberg examples in four-figure territory.

PREDATOR / PATRIOT / COMMON USA-ERA Often a few hundred dollars, depending on exact model and condition.
T-60 / VINTAGE PEAVEY Current examples commonly sit in the several-hundred-dollar range; originality and condition matter.
WOLFGANG / HP / VANDENBERG Can run from roughly $1,000 into several thousand dollars depending on version.
  1. Match exact model, era and country before choosing comparables.
  2. On T-60 and other older Peaveys, verify original pickups, controls and switching; unusual factory electronics are part of the model identity.
  3. On tremolo-equipped Wolfgang, HP and Vandenberg models, inspect knife edges, studs, locking nut and setup.
  4. Check fret wear, neck condition and weight/balance—older Peavey construction can feel very different from current Raptor models.
  5. Use Peavey catalogs and serial lookup to separate genuine variants from seller shorthand.

CURRENT USED MARKET

Search the model name—Peavey alone is too broad

A Predator, T-60, Wolfgang Special and HP 2 can all be Peavey solidbody electrics while sharing very little in price, era or construction. Model-specific searches produce far better evidence.

COMPARE

What else lives in this neighborhood?

Peavey crosses too many eras for one competitor. Compare current Raptor models with modern entry guitars, T-series and older U.S. instruments with same-era American production, and HP/Vandenberg models with premium performance electrics.

HISTORY & COMMENTARY

The T-60 made the manufacturing story part of the guitar story

Hartley Peavey founded the company in 1965. Peavey’s own history credits the company with pioneering CNC-based electric-guitar production in the 1970s, with the T-60 guitar and T-40 bass entering full production by the late 1970s.

That matters because Peavey guitar history is tied to manufacturing method as much as artist association. Later Predator, Patriot, Generation, Wolfgang and HP families added very different chapters. For a buyer today, “Peavey guitar” is therefore a research starting point—not a quality grade or a single construction type.
