Ovation
Ovation is one of the easiest acoustic brands to recognize from across a room—and one of the easiest to oversimplify. Charles Kaman’s aerospace background produced the composite Roundback concept, while decades of Celebrity, Balladeer, Legend, Elite, Adamas and USA instruments created very different price tiers. The bowl shape identifies the family; the model number identifies the guitar.

OVERVIEW
What to know quickly
Roundback is the silhouette—not the price tier. Celebrity, Pro Series, USA Ovation and Adamas can look related while occupying very different markets.
IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR
Which Ovation do you have?
Start with the exact model number. Ovation codes separate Celebrity, Balladeer, Legend, Elite, Custom, 12-string, nylon-string and other families that share the same basic bowl concept.
- Find the model number and label. Photograph the interior label and any preamp markings.
- Identify bowl depth. Deep, mid-depth, shallow and contour bowls can feel and sound different.
- Note the soundhole system. Center-hole and multi-soundhole / epaulet designs narrow the family quickly.
- Document the preamp. OP-series and other electronics help establish era and specification.
- Confirm country of manufacture. Ovation has used both USA and imported production.
SERIES & CURRENT / MARKET GUIDE
Current Ovation still spans several distinct levels
Current official Ovation and Adamas examples checked September 28, 2026. Special editions and regional models can fall outside these bands.
USED VALUE GUIDE
The used market is much larger than the current catalog
Guitar Center showed nearly 300 used Ovation guitars in a September 2026 snapshot. Common Celebrity and Ultra examples appeared from roughly the low $200s into the $500 range, while older Elite, Legend, Custom Legend, Collector’s Series and Adamas instruments climbed much higher.
- Inspect the wooden top for cracks, bridge lift and distortion even though the bowl is composite.
- Check neck angle and saddle height before assuming high action is a simple adjustment.
- Test pickup, preamp, battery compartment and output jack.
- Play shallow-bowl models seated and standing; ergonomics matter.
- Do not treat Adamas, USA Ovation and Celebrity as equivalent.
OWNERSHIP & PRODUCTION
The brand changed hands—but New Hartford still matters
GEWA music acquired Ovation from Drum Workshop in 2020, including Adamas and Applause. Current Ovation material again highlights USA production in New Hartford, while the broader catalog also uses international manufacturing.
Consumer shortcut: “Ovation” tells you the design family. Model, series and country of manufacture tell you the production tier.
CURRENT USED MARKET
Search the model number—especially on older Ovations
A 1117 Legend, CE44 Celebrity and 2087GT Adamas share family resemblance but not market position.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Before you buy—or price—one
- Top condition. Composite bowl does not mean the wooden top cannot crack, lift or distort.
- Bowl depth. Shallow, mid and deep bodies have different feel and acoustic behavior.
- Electronics generations. Older preamps and pickups may be expensive or awkward to replace.
- Origin confusion. USA, imported Ovation and Applause should be identified separately.
- Rare solidbody history. Breadwinner, Deacon, Viper, Preacher and GP electrics are a separate market.
HISTORY & COMMENTARY
Aerospace thinking changed the back of the guitar
Ovation’s own history describes Kaman engineers testing body shapes and materials before settling on a semi-parabolic composite back.
The electro-acoustic side became equally important. Ovation’s stage identity, piezo systems and shallow / contour bodies helped make the brand a recurring sight in amplified acoustic performance.
WHAT PLAYERS LIKE
Why a Ovation can be worth picking up
- Stage utility. Electronics and body options were designed around amplified acoustic use.
- Recognizable ergonomics. Roundback bodies feel unlike conventional flat-back acoustics.
- Model variety. Center-hole, multi-soundhole, 6-string, 12-string and nylon models cover different jobs.
- Adamas engineering. Carbon-composite tops push the original materials experiment further.
- Deep used supply. Decades of production provide many price points and discontinued models.
