B.C. Rich
B.C. Rich is one of the easiest brands to recognize from across a room and one of the easiest to misprice from a logo alone. Warlock, Mockingbird, Ironbird, Rich B, Stealth, Beast and Gunslinger designs have appeared across USA and import production, bolt-on and neck-through construction, modest used instruments and premium builds.

OVERVIEW
What to know quickly
Do not date an old B.C. Rich from the first two serial digits without checking the system. B.C. Rich’s own serial guide says the five-digit neck-through sequence drifted ahead of actual production as output grew; by 1981 those numbers were roughly four years ahead.
IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR
Which B.C. Rich do you have?
First identify body family, then neck construction, country marking, serial format and hardware. A bolt-on import Warlock and an original USA neck-through Warlock can require completely different value comparisons.
- Name the body shape. Warlock, Mockingbird, Ironbird, Rich B/Bich, Stealth, Beast, Gunslinger and JR-V are useful first branches.
- Check bolt-on versus neck-through. Construction quickly narrows the tier and tells you which serial guidance may apply.
- Photograph the serial exactly. Older five-digit, BC-prefixed and later factory-coded imports use different systems.
- Record bridge and pickups. Floyd Rose, Quad bridge, Evertune and pickup packages separate models within the same shape.
SERIES & CURRENT RETAIL
The body shape is only the first branch
Official B.C. Rich pages checked October 12, 2026 show sale/list pricing from roughly $999 for some current models into the low-$2,000s for premium production instruments, with USA Supreme examples above $10,000. Sale prices are not permanent retail.
USED VALUE GUIDE
Start with the exact model
Used B.C. Rich prices are unusually sensitive to era, country, neck construction and model. A modest bolt-on Warlock can coexist in the same search results with vintage USA neck-through instruments worth several times more.
- Identify the serial system before assigning a year.
- Confirm neck construction and country markings.
- Inspect every point and horn for repaired chips, cracks and finish loss.
- Test locking tremolo posts, knife edges, fine tuners and specialty hardware.
- Look for pickup routes, refinishes and parts swaps.

The research neighborhood changes depending on whether the guitar is vintage USA, an import metal guitar or a modern premium build.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Before you buy—or price—one
- Serial-year shortcuts. The classic five-digit sequence can run ahead of actual calendar year.
- USA claims. Inspect the instrument and markings rather than trusting a listing title.
- Class Axe era. 1989–93 requires its own context and includes both USA and import instruments.
- Point damage. Horns and body tips are structural inspection points, not just cosmetic ones.
- Same shape, different tier. Warlock is a shape family—not one specification or one value.
HISTORY & COMMENTARY
A shape vocabulary that became its own category
By the 1970s B.C. Rich was building instruments whose silhouettes were immediately distinguishable from mainstream American designs. That visual identity later spread across many production tiers.
For field identification, the company’s official serial guide is especially useful. It documents the 1974 five-digit neck-through system, explains how production volume pushed numbers ahead of actual years, separates bolt-on numbering, describes the Class Axe period and lays out later factory codes. Read the serial system before reading the year.
WHAT PLAYERS LIKE
Why a B.C. Rich can be worth picking up
- Instant visual identity. Few brands are as recognizable from body silhouette alone.
- Wide performance range. Fixed bridges, Floyd Rose, Evertune and specialty hardware all appear.
- Collector depth. Vintage USA instruments reward detailed research.
- Current choice. Legacy, Prophecy, Extreme and USA/custom categories keep the brand active.
CURRENT RETAIL & REFERENCE
On vintage B.C. Rich instruments, the serial format is evidence—but the company itself warns that some sequences do not map directly to the apparent year.
