ST. LOUIS MUSIC · ACOUSTIC SPECIALIST · YAIRI PARTNERSHIP

Alvarez

Alvarez is an acoustic-focused brand with an unusually wide ladder: entry Regent guitars, solid-top Artist and Artist Elite models, all-solid Masterworks, premium Laureate instruments and handmade Alvarez-Yairi guitars from Kani, Japan. The brand was established by St. Louis Music in 1965 and has worked with the Yairi workshop for more than half a century. On a used Alvarez, the series name can change the entire value conversation.

OVERVIEW

What to know quickly

ESTABLISHED Alvarez was established by St. Louis Music in 1965; the brand remains owned by St. Louis Music.
SERIES LADDER Regent, Artist, Artist Elite, Masterworks, Laureate and Yairi create distinct construction and price tiers.
YAIRI Alvarez says its partnership with the K. Yairi factory in Kani, Japan has continued for more than 55 years.

The Alvarez name spans student guitars and hand-built Japanese instruments. Find the series first—especially before using another Alvarez as a price comparison.

IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR

Which Alvarez do you have?

Alvarez model codes are especially useful. A short string such as AD60, MD70, LD70e or DYMRJP often tells you series, body family and electronics context before you even inspect the construction.

  1. Find the full model code. AD/RD/MD/LD/DY and related prefixes are more useful than the headstock logo alone.
  2. Identify the series. Regent, Artist, Artist Elite, Masterworks, Laureate and Yairi occupy meaningfully different tiers.
  3. Photograph the soundhole label and serial. This is especially important for older Alvarez-Yairi and discontinued models.
  4. Confirm body shape and electronics. Dreadnought, OM/Folk, Grand Auditorium, Parlor, baritone, 12-string and classical versions should not be merged.
  5. For Yairi, document factory and originality carefully. Handmade Kani-built guitars deserve their own comparable set rather than ordinary imported Alvarez pricing.

USED VALUE GUIDE

The series name is the price map

Guitar Center showed more than 270 used Alvarez guitars in late September 2026. The same search mixed inexpensive student and Artist guitars, all-solid Masterworks, vintage instruments and Alvarez-Yairi models. That makes brand-wide averages especially misleading.

REGENT / ARTIST Many used examples fall roughly around $200–$600.
MASTERWORKS / PREMIUM Frequently about $500–$1,200+ depending on exact model and condition.
YAIRI / VINTAGE / RARE Often $800–$2,000+ in current dealer asks, with collectible examples higher.
  1. Match the exact series and model code before comparing price.
  2. Inspect neck angle, saddle height, bridge adhesion, top geometry and fret condition on every acoustic.
  3. Verify whether electronics are original and fully functional on acoustic-electric models.
  4. On older Yairi instruments, preserve labels, serials, cases and provenance before changing hardware.
  5. Do not use a current Laureate or Yairi MSRP to inflate the value of an unrelated older entry-series Alvarez.

Alvarez has enough used supply for model-specific research. Search the full model code whenever possible; DY85, AD60, MD70 and LD70e should never share one comparison pool.

HISTORY & COMMENTARY

St. Louis Music and Yairi built a two-continent identity

Alvarez was established by St. Louis Music in 1965. By the late 1960s the company was working with master luthier Kazuo Yairi, beginning a partnership that Alvarez says has continued uninterrupted for more than 55 years.

That partnership explains why 'Alvarez' can mean two related but very different production stories. Much of the catalog is designed around accessible-to-premium imported acoustics, while Alvarez-Yairi instruments are handmade in Kani, Japan. The modern Laureate and Masterworks lines add still more layers between those endpoints, making the series name indispensable to identification.
